25 Jan Behind the scenes: Interview with our Guest Relations Assistant, Indiana
Indiana joined City Relay in 2018 as a Guest Relations Assistant as part of her studies and wanted to improve her knowledge of the hospitality industry. We would like to share her experience with you and how she works within the team which communicates with guests every day.
Shaq: Hello Indiana, so start by telling me why did you decide to move to London?
Indiana: I decided to move to London because it is such an attractive city with a lot of educational opportunities that are excellent, within the hospitality and tourism industry.
Shaq: How did you find out about City Relay?
Indiana: As I am studying in a hospitality school, an internship is a mandatory part of my studies. My school partnered with Hosco which provides us with numerous job opportunities in and around the industry. I found out about City relay by browsing on the website. I was attracted by the concept of the company, as previously I mainly worked in hotels and for this second internship I wanted to do something different from my prior experience.
Shaq: What were you looking for when you applied at City Relay, what was your primary objective?
Indiana: When I applied for City Relay, I was looking for a guest-facing role. Before starting my internship at City Relay, I always had a “shy” personality. I was not always confident with myself talking in front of guests. City Relay had allowed me to improve on it and I am very grateful.
Shaq: What was your first impression of the company?
Indiana: My first impression of the company was that it is such a dynamic company. Honestly, I felt that I would fit in the team straight away because of the environment they provided, and the group dynamic.
Shaq: Could you describe your team three words?
Indiana: Fast, efficient and hardworking
Shaq: What are the essential skills necessary for your position?
Indiana: In my opinion, the critical skill necessary for my position are communication, teamwork and being flexible.
Shaq: After this six-month internship, what are the main things that you learned from this position? Do you believe that you evolved, regarding skills?
Indiana: After my six-month internship, all I can say is THANK YOU!
They have improved all my skills and I learned more about myself and my capabilities. Being part of the ‘guest relation’ is not only answering email or phone calls, but it is also way more than that, being there in the moment whenever there was an issue needed solving.
Shaq: What has been your biggest challenge so far? How did you deal with it?
Indiana: So far the biggest challenge I had, was during my first week when I had to deal with situations I had never dealt with before such as dealing with keys and complaints from customers. Well, I had great leaders, and they taught me the best way to manage the stress and the guest when these situations arose.
Shaq: What do you enjoy the most about working in your position?
Indiana: Working as a guest relation assistant, you will face challenges every day. It keeps you on your toes but that’s the fun part
Shaq: In your opinion, what are the positives and negatives of working in a startup environment?
Indiana: The positives, in my opinion, is the fact that we can have more responsibility as we have a smaller team. A lot of time we are involved in making our own decisions, and this helps you gain more experience, as you have to accept responsibility.
The negatives are as we are growing so fast, sometimes there are growing pains and a few more pressures on the team. However, I believe we have handled this well and will continue to do so because of our great team and company spirit.
Shaq: Do you have a ritual to keep yourself in a good mood?
Indiana: Always drink a coffee before coming to work and always try to smile this keeps me in a good mood.
Shaq: What’s your favorite place in London?
Indiana: My favorite place in London would be Chelsea, as it looks very similar to my hometown Paris and I feel like I’m home every time I have a chance to go there.
During the internship, Indiana was able to improve her skills and learn more about what it feels like to work in a fast paced environment. She has nearly completed her 6-month course, and we must admit we will miss her not being in our team.
