What started off as International Women’s Day in the US in 1911 became Women’s History Week in 1980. Ten years later, in 1987, a US law was passed to declare the whole month of March as Women’s History Month. This month is a celebration of the extraordinary contributions women have made throughout history and in the present day.

We are very fortunate to have some fantastic, smart and driven women within the company and throughout the month we will be spotlighting some of them and how they are working to make City Relay a success.

Some of our own heroes that we have already highlighted are Amy, Head of People, who looks after all of us with infectious enthusiasm, Monika, Housekeeping Manager, who ensures our properties are maintained to the highest of standards, and Bernadett, Guest Relations Manager, who works non-stop to ensure our guests’ stays are as seamless as possible.

So, how can you get involved?

There are lots of things you can do to make a difference within yourself and in society.

Consider supporting a charity that works with and for women, such as The Fawcett Society, which advocates for gender equality or Smart Works, which provides low-income women with smart clothes and job interview coaching.

You could also make the most of your social media and share a woman who inspires you or articles and infographics relating to Women’s History Month.

Eradicating unconscious gender bias in the workplace is not going to happen overnight; it requires a conscious effort to change our thinking and actions. We have some great book recommendations to help get you thinking:

  • Invisible Women – Caroline Criado Perez
  • Unfinished Business: Women, Men, Work, Family – Anne-Marie Slaughter
  • Bossypants – Tina Fey

At City Relay, we champion diversity & equality. We recognise there is still a long way to go but we want to be a part of the solution. We pledge to continue encouraging an inclusive work culture where women thrive in their careers and their achievements are celebrated.

But just because Women’s History Month is coming to a close at the end of the month doesn’t mean the conversation has to end there. We are constantly working on making certain our workplace is an inclusive environment throughout the year.

With so many barriers yet to be broken, a unified effort is required to challenge stereotypes and overcome inequality, one step at a time.

Follow us on our social media channels to stay updated with our journey.
